What Does a Radiator Do?

The radiator is the central heat exchanger in a vehicle's cooling system. Its job is to remove heat from the coolant after it has circulated through the engine block, and return it cooled so the cycle can continue.

Here is how that cycle works in practice.

Coolant absorbs heat from the engine as it flows through internal passages in the engine block. The hot coolant then travels to the radiator, where it passes through a series of narrow tubes surrounded by thin metal fins. Air flows through those fins assisted by the radiator fan when the vehicle is stationary or moving slowly transferring the heat out of the coolant and into the surrounding air. The now-cooled coolant returns to the engine to absorb more heat, and the process repeats continuously while the engine is running.

Every internal combustion vehicle has a radiator.

What Does an Intercooler Do?

The intercooler is a different type of heat exchanger entirely. It does not cool engine coolant. It cools the compressed air produced by a turbocharger or supercharger before that air enters the engine's intake manifold.

The turbocharger compresses air before forcing it into the engine, which allows the engine to burn more fuel per combustion cycle and produce more power. The problem is that compressing air generates significant heat. Hot air is less dense than cool air, which means hot compressed air contains less oxygen per unit of volume. Less oxygen per volume means less efficient combustion and less power output, partially negating the benefit of the turbocharger.

The intercooler solves this by bringing the temperature of the compressed air down before it enters the engine. Cooler, denser air carries more oxygen, which means more efficient combustion, better power output, and in many cases, better fuel economy under load.

Only turbocharged or supercharged vehicles have an intercooler. Naturally aspirated engines, which draw air at atmospheric pressure without a turbocharger, do not need one and do not have one.

The intercooler sits between the turbocharger output and the engine intake manifold. In most configurations it is mounted at the front of the vehicle near the radiator (known as a front-mounted intercooler, or FMIC), where it benefits from the same airflow. Side-mounted and top-mounted configurations exist on specific vehicles depending on the engine layout and manufacturer design.

What happens when it fails:

Intercooler failure presents differently from radiator failure, which is one reason the two components are sometimes confused by customers. The first symptom is typically a noticeable reduction in power output, particularly under acceleration or when the engine is under load. Fuel consumption may increase. The turbo lag the driver experiences between pressing the accelerator and feeling the power delivery may become more pronounced.

In cases where the intercooler develops an internal leak, oil or coolant may contaminate the intake tract, producing exhaust smoke and rough running.

What intercooler failure does not typically cause is a rapid spike in engine coolant temperature. The two systems are separate. A failing intercooler does not cause the coolant temperature gauge to climb the way a failing radiator does.
